Balayage vs. Highlights — Which One Is Right for You?
Balayage is freehand and lived-in. Highlights are foiled and bright. Here's exactly how to decide which fits your hair and lifestyle.
Balayage and traditional highlights are the two most-requested lightening services, and they produce very different results.
Balayage
Freehand-painted lightener swept onto the surface. Soft, sun-kissed, no visible line of demarcation. Full paint 2× per year.
Highlights
Woven sections wrapped in foil. Brighter, more uniform, defined pieces. Full highlights every 8–12 weeks.
Which lasts longer
Balayage. Because there's no line at the root, you can stretch 4–6 months between full appointments.
Which is brighter
Highlights. Foils deliver more lift than freehand painting.
