These four terms get used interchangeably on social media, but they're distinct techniques that produce different results. Here's how our color team defines each one.
Root smudge
A liquid demi-permanent color melted through the first inch or two of the root to blur the line between your natural base and your highlights. Adds softness, not depth.
Root shadow
A deeper, more saturated application than a smudge. Creates a visible shadow of color at the root for a lived-in, low-maintenance dimensional finish.
Root tap
The lightest of the four — a very quick brush-through of tone right at the root to knock back brassy new growth between highlight appointments.
Base break
A gentle lift on virgin base color to break up flat, solid tone without committing to full highlights. Ideal for clients dipping a toe into dimension.
